Community Events

As a core aspect of our mission, WHMLIS endeavors to “quicken the social and intellectual lives of our people.” To that end, each summer the Society organizes several special events that are run by our volunteers and bring together our entire community. Over the years, we have authored cookbooks, hosted garden tours, and welcomed interesting authors to our community for book talks. There are also three events that we are proud to host annually.

For as long as any of us can remember, we kick off each summer season with our lively Fourth of July Bicycle Parade, which sets off from the Memorial Library on Everett Avenue and ends at the Merry-Go-Round. We gather for festive and patriotic decorating of bikes, strollers, and wagons prior to the parade. All ages are encouraged to join the fun.

During the last week of July, the WHMLIS hosts an Art Show. Held in the Watch Hill Chapel Undercroft, the show highlights the talents of local artists. The focus of the show alternates yearly between art and photography, and the public is welcome.

Our Summer Boutique is a highlight of the season and takes place midsummer each year on the Village Green. Our dedicated volunteers organize dozens of unique vendors providing an interesting shopping experience, as well as an opportunity to build community spirit.
