In 1889, the original mission of the WHMLIS was to "develop, improve and beautify the village, to secure public health and cultivate public spirit as well as to quicken the social and intellectual life of the people."
Over the years, the charge has expanded to:
Maintain the library in the Memorial Building
Sustain the planted islands in the village
Showcase local artists in art and photography shows
Sponsor children's programs
Assist with local attractions, including the Lighthouse, Merry-Go-Round, and the Chief Ninigret and The Dreamer statues.
